Transcription Of Video For Hearing Accessibility:
-Right now there is an ethnic genocide occurring in China
-The Uyghur people are an ethnic minority, who according to the UN are being forcibly held in China’s camps.
-The Uyghur people are a Turkic ethnic group. A majority portion of Uyghur people are Muslims who live in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.
-Roughly 3 million Uyghurs from all walks of life and professions have been subjected to witch hunts which have caused many to be detained without a warrant, charge or trial. And many are said to be locked in conditions where they have reported being tortured, beaten and raped.
- Yet the Chinese government continuously claims that there have been no instances of abuse against the Uyghur people and that these camps are actually job training centers and “education camps”.
-China claims that the camps are providing instructions on how to write and speak Mandarin, learn labour skills and quote "knowledge of urban life". The white paper report from the Chinese Government says that the camps have helped people from rural areas start their own businesses and get jobs in factories after receiving state support, so that they could quote “counter terrorism” and “alleviate poverty”
-Despite proclamations from the Chinese government, brave Uyghur men, women and children risked their lives to speak up about conditions that mirror concentration camp structure and enforce modern day slavery. Inside of the camps, many Uighur people say that their culture and identity is being beaten out of them through indoctrination. Not only that but many women in the facility have underwent forced abortions and suffered sexual assault and abuse.
-Some say the action is part of a larger campaign by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to promote nationalism among the ethnic Han majority – and to suppress ethnic, cultural and religious identities, as well as the government's financial needs. Seeing as the Uyghur people live in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, which is a region three times the size of France that contains huge amounts of natural gas, oil and cotton used for world production. China has also been building a multi-billion dollar highway and railway network connecting China and Europe, across the Uyghur people’s homeland.
-Even Uyghur people who live outside of Xinjiang face prosecution. Discriminatory checkpoints, surveillance through facial recognition, and QR codes that are placed outside of their home by government officials are just some of the many daily human rights violations.
-Not only that but recent reports also show that Uyghur people are being forced to work in Xinjiang factories and supply chains that are linked to supply goods for Global U.S brands.
-As it stands today, Genocide is still in-fact occurring against the Uyghur people in China.
-So what is being done about it? Although many countries, and the U.N, have spoken out, it’s incredibly hard for the U.N to pass any resolutions because China has veto power in the security council, and the ICC has no jurisdiction in China.
-Yet many activists still continue to fight on the ground and abroad. We’re in a current space where those who are oppressing the Uyghur people are using media censorship and press embargo to keep information from getting out. Media is one of the most powerful tools in the fight for rights
-If you’re abroad, some ways that you can help beyond signing a petition and writing letters is by donating to the Uyghur refugees who have managed to flee to Turkey, You can donate to causes that help provide food, housing, and education and more to Turkey’s Uyghur community, which I will include help links below to. You can also boycott shopping at major global companies that support forced Uyghur labor, which would lower Chinese revenues and help to end the practice. And you can also put public pressure on tech companies like Hewlett Packard and Intel Corporation to stop supporting the functionality of mobile apps, facial recognition software, and other programs that are used to track Uyghurs in China.
-If you liked to stay informed on developments, we’re following these abuses closely, and will be listing ways that you can get involved on our website.
